I DO VAGUELY REMEMBER MY HONEY MAGE I'm glad he still gets talked about. :3c I made some NPC sheets for his sister and her husband a while ago, but I don't think Felix ever got a sheet.
His sister and her husband opened a bar/restaurant in Chicago that was a widely known neutral ground/Occult Underground hangout, and had a secret menu where you could order things that adepts might want like razor blades or blue honey or whatever.
LMAO I'm sorry I should've named myself. I just was mo_om!!! and pounced on the post too fast.
Really? That's great; I'd love to see the sheets, if you still have 'em kicking around.
I didn't remember where the couple had their place, but here's what I remembered/guessed: Felix and his sisters (because IIRC, he has more than the one? and is the youngest of the lot) were taught adepts, since their great-grandmother was the first adept in the family. The family, with the exception of the sister who moved away, has a catering company in Edmonton (and at least one chinchilla, Blueberry being an occasional biter). Felix and Sam crossed paths in university (I think Felix was returning, though I don't know what for; I do remember he's a few years older than he looks because his whole family's enjoying decelerated aging) and the kitchen witches were Sam's intro to the OU proper. They remain on good terms; she stops in to visit when she goes home to the Northwest Territories, usually once in the summer and once in the winter... for Folk on the Rocks and for Christmas, respectively.
What I took liberties with: - Sam went in with the kitchen witches, to barter a number of keys for a useful ritual (for sending messages which appear only to the intended recipient, on the first blank piece of paper they handle, or the first blank textbox they open). You remember the cleidomancer I thought about making, the one who had that spell to alert him when a door/lock he'd enchanted was bypassed? - Sam stole got an old, old-fashioned dressmaker's dummy to trade to the power couple, who were looking to acquire one ASAP. Possibly to use in a sort of ward/proxy-flavoured ritual benefiting the mielomancer? (Possibly she's expecting and they're taking all the precautions; possibly it's pretty recent news, which could explain why they'd want something like that as soon as it could come.) A dressmaker's dummy completely covered in brass pins seems like it would be a good principle component for a protective effect. - Later on, Sam will trade a key worth a major charge (thanks, aliens) to the key guy for one more ritual (She's going to get a slightly modified version of Neptune's Awakening, of whatever it is in UA3 that's like "if you don't drown, you get a sig. good going!")
Goddamn, you remember more about Felix than I do. These liberties sound pretty excellent, though. :3c
I'll try to find those sheets for you, I thiiiiiink I still have them kicking around? I remember that Felix's sister and her Fleshworker husband were both secretly Sleepers and using having such a great neutral territory/the fact that people seriously tell bartenders everything to keep tabs on the Chicago Underground scene and keep it under wraps. And I had I think a pair of Boozehounds associated with the bar, too? One was a cranky old asshole, the other was a ditzy as fuck Boozehound/Fool combo who loved erryone and was a concierge at a snazzy hotel, so he knew like EVERYTHING going on in the city and could basically procure anything you wanted with mad networking skills.
OH! Felix is /your/ character? 8D Sam's mentioned him a few times. Well...no, wait, she's not. Not by name, anyway - she's been really careful about that. /I/ know the name from narrative.
LOL if they ever meet, Darnell will be able to commiserate - he's /also/ the youngest and the only boy. Catherine is the oldest, Linda's the middle, and Darnell's the "baby"...something that Cat reminds him off at every opportunity. She calls him "Baby Bro" even now when they're all in their 30's (37, 36, and just turned 33...Darnell's bday was on the 12th). XD
Yup! He's never gotten a sheet written for him or anything that I recall, but Brit and I have messed around with him a bit ages and ages ago. They should definitely meet and be able to commiserate about being adorable babby brothers in a house full of girls.
I'm glad you approve! I really probably should have cleared these things with you, but I figured you wouldn't mind much, BUT I am nevertheless very glad to have the Infy Seal of Approval.
Also: if Felix is going to be an uncle, MAN his nibling is going to have an interesting upbringing. I wonder if this hypothetical kid would end up growing up to be a mielomancer (as per the family tradition) or what. One thing's for sure; between mielomancy's Elixer and their fleshworking dad, they're never going to be sick a day.
I DID NOT REMEMBER THE SLEEPERS THING. HOT DAMN. Though TBH that's probably a pretty cushy turf for Sleepers because I doubt the Chicago rats want their town drawing any heat. I'm kind of digging the thought of the boozehounds, too, especially the ditzy one, because nothing's as much fun as a good rumour mill... and a big fancy hotel has to be prime rumour-growing ground.
Also, that reminds me of a quote from (I think) some Stephen King book: "There are two types of work-functional alcoholics. Those just too snake-mean to fall down, and those so sweet other people cover for them, way past the point of insanity." I'n misquoting, but.
God yeah, this hypothetical kid would be fuckin SET no matter what path they take. As are their parents TBH, that's an amazingly cushy turf. They don't even NEED to reveal the fact that they're Sleepers, just operating a business for the Underground's sake ensures that people understand why they have a stake in the peace, and makes sure that people actively and aggressively are invested in keeping this space safe for themselves, too. If literally anyone threatens that bar, they've probably got the wrath of like half the city coming down on their heads.
That quote is absolutely right TBH. IIRC the mean bitter asshole is a university professor or some bullshit? But the concierge is just so ridiculously sweet that everyone loves him and also wants to keep him safe. If you can do favors/provide information for practically everyone, and so blatantly have no hidden agenda because you're a goddamn FOOL, then you're kinda automatically a precious resource to be preserved at all costs. Even his muggle coworkers probably help cover for his ass, but I think I gave him a fairly high skill in pretending to be sober instead of just constantly low-key drunk, too.
"If you can do favors/provide information for practically everyone, and so blatantly have no hidden agenda because you're a goddamn FOOL..." - LOL someone else that Darnell could relate to.
Darnell Barrett is a sweet guy and an incredibly useful person to know, and did her a solid the first time they met without playing an angle. He's her favourite checker, and ALWAYS WILL BE.
Also I'm still quietly losing my mind at how now, at long last, we have a little OU knot emerging. YASSSS
Yes. He's jussst on the outside of the OU, too, and Sam is just on the inside, and it's been great fun---I don't know why I didn't yell at you sooner, but here we are going "ONE OF US, ONE OF US" at Marissa, and Darnell's one wall-break away from the same treatment. Perfect.
